Savage Highlands State Park: A New Outdoor Adventure Destination in Western Maryland

Summer in the Mid-Atlantic is about to get a whole lot more exciting for outdoor enthusiasts. Savage Highlands State Park, a brand-new destination set to open later this summer, is poised to offer a unique camping and outdoor adventure experience in the picturesque landscapes of western Maryland. This park combines the tranquility of classic forest scenery with cozy accommodations like cabins and yurts, making it an appealing escape for travelers seeking a nature-filled getaway without compromising on comfort.

Located just 12 miles from Grantsville, a quaint mountain town, this 40-acre park is nestled within the expansive Savage River State Forest. The property, once a private lodge retreat, was purchased by the state for approximately $8.7 million to be transformed into a public park. The renovations aim to create a welcoming and immersive outdoor experience for visitors.

What sets Savage Highlands apart from other parks is its diverse range of accommodations. In addition to traditional tent sites, the park will feature eight resort-style yurts, each capable of accommodating two to four guests. These upgraded yurts will offer modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, bathrooms, and propane fireplaces, providing a luxurious woodland retreat for visitors.

Adding to the allure are 18 cabins that will be open year-round. These cabins boast full bathrooms, lofts, and internet access, with some specially designed to be ADA-accessible and pet-friendly. For those seeking a more traditional camping experience, backcountry campsites will also be available. The existing lodge on the property is being renovated and will serve as the park’s central hub for information and reservations.

One of the most enticing aspects for travelers is the affordability of these accommodations compared to when the property operated as a private lodge. This makes the park accessible to a wider range of visitors, opening up the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Maryland wilderness.

While the comfortable accommodations at Savage Highlands will undoubtedly draw visitors, it is the surrounding landscape that truly steals the spotlight. The park offers approximately eight miles of hiking and multi-use trails weaving through the encompassing state forest, ideal for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Visitors can also cool off by wading in Mudlick Run or the Savage River, popular spots for anglers with the proper licenses. In the winter, these trails transform into snowshoeing and cross-country skiing routes, with equipment available for rent at the lodge.

Savage Highlands State Park not only provides a new way to experience Maryland’s wilderness but also offers easy access to other nearby outdoor adventures. Rocky Gap State Park, just 27 miles away, features a vast lake for boating and kayaking, as well as hiking trails and camping areas, making it a convenient addition to a longer outdoor excursion. Additionally, travelers can explore the local shops and restaurants in Grantsville or take a scenic drive through the mountain roads of western Maryland.

As interest in outdoor travel and glamping continues to rise, Savage Highlands State Park emerges as a captivating destination in the heart of Maryland’s beautiful landscapes. With its blend of scenic hiking trails, comfortable lodging options, and proximity to other parks and rivers, this new park promises to be a must-visit for those seeking a unique adventure in the mountains of western Maryland.
