Rising Concerns Over Travel-Related Infections: Chikungunya and Oropouche Virus Spread to the UK

Travel-related infections are on the rise, with deadly viruses like chikungunya and oropouche making their way to the UK via international travel. These viruses, once confined to tropical regions, are now spreading to Europe and the US, causing concern among experts.

Chikungunya, transmitted through mosquito bites, can lead to severe joint pain and even organ damage in some cases. The UK has seen a significant increase in chikungunya cases, with most linked to travel to countries like Sri Lanka and India.

Oropouche, known as “sloth fever,” is another virus causing worry among health officials. Transmitted by midges and mosquitoes, it can cause flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, lead to brain inflammation. While fatalities are rare, the spread of oropouche is a cause for concern in Europe.

In addition to chikungunya and oropouche, health officials are also monitoring cases of cholera and dengue in the UK. With rising global temperatures and increased international travel, the risk of these mosquito-borne viruses reaching the UK is higher than ever.

To protect themselves, travellers are advised to take precautions like using insect repellent, covering exposed skin, and using treated bed nets. Vaccines for chikungunya are available at private travel clinics, offering some level of protection against these infectious diseases.
