Retired FBI Agent Challenges Clearing of Guthrie Family as Suspects

On the heels of Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos announcing that the Guthrie family—including spouses—had been cleared as suspects in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, retired FBI agent Jonathan Gilliam is speaking out.

During an appearance on The Will Cain Show, Gilliam challenged Nanos’ comments, calling his statements “emotional” rather than based in fact.

“I think when we look at the statements [that the] sheriff made, and the fact that he’s saying they’re cleared, that sounds to me like an emotional statement from the sheriff. Or a personal statement that he’s making, not one that is based in facts because unless they know who was in that home, which we don’t know if they know that, unless they have all of their timelines where they were—and they know for fact that nobody hired anyone to do something, there’s no way to absolutely clear them,” Gilliam said.

“They can say…right now they’re not a subject in our investigation, but to say that they’re cleared, that’s just not a factual statement. It’s a final statement,” he added.

Gilliam’s comments were made after Nanos put a statement out on social media saying, “To be clear…the Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case.”

Nanos’ statement came after an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail in which he was less clear about the possibility of family involvement.

Nancy, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Authorities believe that she may have been abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night. Prior to her disappearance, Nancy had dinner with her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and Annie’s husband, Cioni, at their home, about four miles away from her home. Nanos previously told The New York Times that Cioni dropped Nancy off at home around 9:45 p.m. local time that evening. She hasn’t been seen since.

Clearly, the Guthrie family faces ongoing scrutiny and speculation in the case of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance as the search for answers continues.
