Remembering The Homecoming: A Christmas Story and The Waltons

In 1971, viewers were first introduced to the Walton family in the TV movie “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story.” Based on the book “Spencer’s Mountain” by Earl Hamner Jr., the movie featured most of the cast that would later star in the CBS series “The Waltons” for nine seasons. John “Pa” Walton was portrayed by Andrew Duggan and “Ma” Olivia was played by Patricia Neal in the movie, while legendary ventriloquist and vaudevillian Edgar Bergen took on the role of Grandpa Zeb Walton. The pilot movie aired on CBS on Dec. 19, 1971.

The beloved film was set in rural Virginia on Christmas Eve 1933 as the Walton family prepared for the holiday while their patriarch traveled home during a snowstorm.

In a series of Instagram posts in December 2025, Kami Cotler, who played youngest Walton daughter, Elizabeth, reflected on filming in Wyoming more than 50 years ago. Cotler, who was just six years old during filming, shared memories of staying at The Virginian Lodge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the cast and crew filmed exterior scenes. She recalled trick-or-treating door-to-door with her teacher, Mrs. King, and being entertained by Edgar Bergen’s show in the lobby.

In another post, Cotler shared a photo of the opening scene with some of the Walton children walking home in the deep snow. She reminisced about filming in Wyoming, where snow had to be trucked in for the shoot and recalled vivid memories of the filming experience.

Cotler previously shared in an interview that she landed the role in “The Homecoming” partially due to her red hair. Despite initial concerns about her ability to memorize lines, she found success in the role. When the film was picked up to become a TV series, she was excited to reunite with the cast.

Overall, Cotler’s reflections on her time filming “The Homecoming” offer a glimpse into the magic of classic television and the lasting impact of a show that captured the hearts of audiences for years to come.
