The news of Morris’ death was confirmed by music journalist John Robb, a close friend of Morris, though the cause of death has not been disclosed. While Sid Vicious briefly filled in as drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees before joining the Sex Pistols, it was Morris who made his mark as the band’s first official drummer, contributing to their first two albums, “The Scream” in 1978 and “Join Hands” in 1979.
In a dramatic turn of events in 1979, Morris and guitarist John McKay parted ways with Siouxsie and the Banshees following a heated argument during an in-store record signing. Budgie, drummer for The Slits, stepped in to replace Morris and remained with the band until 1996.
After departing from the Banshees, Morris went on to collaborate with U.K. singer Helen Terry as a drummer. Additionally, he ventured into the realm of film directing, creating several short films before eventually relocating to Ireland in the early ’90s. There, he transitioned into the role of an art teacher and gallery owner.
Morris’ influence extended far beyond his time with Siouxsie and the Banshees. His distinctive drumming style served as a source of inspiration for other renowned drummers such as Stephen Morris of Joy Division and New Order, and Lol Tolhurst of the Cure. Tolhurst praised Morris in his book “Goth,” highlighting the power of Morris’ drums alongside John McKay’s guitar and Steven Severin’s bass in creating the Banshees’ unique sound.
In his later years, Morris rediscovered his passion for drumming, joining the Dublin post-punk band Shrine of the Vampyre. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, he managed to complete his memoir, set for release later this year.
