Remembering Jo Ann Boyce: A Legacy of Love and Activism

A beloved former Disney star’s family is facing heartache once again. Jo Ann Allen Boyce, grandmother of the late Descendants star Cameron Boyce, passed away at the age of 84 in her home in Wilshire Vista, California, surrounded by loved ones. Her battle with pancreatic cancer came to an end on December 3, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Jo Ann Boyce was not just known as Cameron Boyce’s grandmother; she was also a civil rights activist. In 1956, she was part of the historic “Clinton 12”, a group of Black students who integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee amidst violent protests. This courageous act marked a significant moment in the fight for racial equality after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.

Her son, Victor Boyce, shared the news of her passing on his Instagram page with a heartfelt message, honoring her memory. Beyond her family ties, Jo Ann Boyce had a successful career as a pediatric nurse and was a member of the vocal trio The Debs.

Despite facing challenges like a major stroke and breast cancer, Jo Ann Boyce continued to shine bright. Her daughter-in-law, Libby Boyce, shared with the Los Angeles Times that Jo Ann had a magnetic presence and lit up any room she entered.

In an Instagram post from October 2018, Cameron Boyce paid tribute to his grandmother’s legacy, highlighting her impact on civil rights. He captured moments from events where she was recognized for her activism, emphasizing her role in changing the world.

Cameron Boyce’s untimely passing at the age of 20 in July 2019 shook fans around the world. The Descendants star tragically lost his life to a fatal seizure caused by epilepsy while he slept.
