Remembering Jim Stringer: A Musical Pioneer of Austin

As Austin mourns the loss of a musical icon, guitarist and bandleader Jim Stringer, who passed away at 77 after battling cancer, the city’s music scene has lost a true legend. Stringer’s impact on the community was profound, as he played a central role in shaping Austin’s musical landscape for over three decades. His bandmate and friend Rosie Flores, who shared the stage with Stringer in the Blue Moon Jazz Quartet, honored him with a heartfelt tribute.

Stringer’s musical journey began in Kansas, where at the age of eight, he was inspired by watching Elvis Presley on TV and received a guitar decorated with Roy Rogers and Trigger for Christmas. This moment sparked his love for music and set him on a path to becoming a talented guitarist and bandleader. Stringer’s career included playing in various bands before founding the AM Band in 1997, a roots-and-rockabilly group that became a staple in Austin’s music scene.

Throughout his career, Stringer released multiple albums with the AM Band, including Swang (1999), On The Radio (2001), and Triskadekaphilia (2008). In addition to his work with the AM Band, Stringer collaborated with other groups like Git Gone and the Blue Moon Jazz Quartet, leaving a lasting impact on Austin’s music community.

After moving to Austin in 1993, Stringer continued to share his talent with the world, producing the country-jazz album Travis County Pickin’ with local musicians. His dedication to his craft and his commitment to quality music were recognized when he was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2007, cementing his legacy as a musical pioneer.

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Jim Stringer, we remember a man whose passion for music touched the hearts of many and whose dedication to his craft inspired generations of musicians. Stringer’s influence on Austin’s music scene will continue to resonate for years to come, reminding us of the power of music to bring people together and create lasting memories.
