Remembering Andrea Orani: Her Legacy in New Zealand’s Music Scene

Andrea Orani, better known in New Zealand’s underground music scene as DJ Andyheartthrob, has died at age 33. With her trademark creativity, Andrea made an indelible contribution to the creative network she nurtured.

Diagnosed in September 2023 with stage-four metastatic bowel cancer, Andrea faced her illness with great courage and resilience. The cancer had spread to her liver, lymph nodes and lungs, making it an aggressive fight. Nevertheless, Andrea still proved herself, hosting one of her last sets at the Boiler Room event at Rarotonga, Cook Islands, in May 2024. Despite the adversity, her performance was a testament to her faith in music never wavered.

Andrea’s impact went well beyond her performances. As the founder of DJs Anonymous and Dynasty Collective, she was part of a vibrant music scene in New Zealand. She also played a pivotal role in introducing and connecting Auckland audiences with international talents such as Jersey club pioneer UNiiQU3, facilitating opportunities for networking and collaboration within the community.

Her cancer fight led to a massive fundraising push to fund her treatment, donations also contributing to immunotherapy and alternative care, as well as support for her toddler, Ruuru. Andrea kept her supporters informed of her progress, relaying her experiences with raw honesty and grace.

Friends and colleagues describe Andrea as a beacon of light and creativity who lifted others up and encouraged them to follow their dreams. In the spaces she created, the people she touched, and the music she shared with the world, her legacy lives on. Andrew Orani will be missed but will live long in New Zealand’s music and creative communities.
