In his youth, Prince Harry was known for his mischievous antics, leaving even his own bodyguard in disbelief at his cheeky behavior. Royal expert Charles Ray shared a humorous anecdote about Harry and his former bodyguard Ken Wharfe, who was tasked with looking after the young prince and his brother, Prince William, back in the late 80s. Wharfe later became Princess Diana’s bodyguard from 1988 to 1993.
One particular incident that Ray recounted involved Harry wanting to play policeman with Wharfe, who would give him a radio to communicate while at Kensington Palace. However, one day, Wharfe realized Harry had sneaked out of the palace gates and across the road to a record shop, much to the bodyguard’s shock. Despite his concerns, Wharfe had to retrieve the adventurous prince.
Wharfe himself has shared the story of Harry slipping away from the palace grounds, admitting he worried about losing track of the young Duke of Sussex. He mentioned how he would assign Harry tasks to keep him occupied, such as talking to various staff members on the palace grounds. Yet, it was during one of these tasks that Harry managed to sneak off on his own.
Despite the occasional boredom Harry faced as a child, his upbringing within Kensington Palace with his parents, Princess Diana and now-King Charles, was far from ordinary. During a recent virtual book event to promote his upcoming memoir ‘Spare’, Harry reflected on his unique childhood memories. He described his time running around the vast palace as an adventure, filled with intrigue and exploration.
While some may assume royal children have free rein to roam castle corridors and discover hidden secrets, Harry dispelled that notion. He explained that growing up in such an environment made him view it as normal, when in reality, it was far from it. While there were no sophisticated trap doors or secret passageways, Harry fondly recalled the fun of investigating various nooks and crannies within the palace walls. His childhood experiences were anything but conventional, offering a glimpse into his atypical upbringing as a young royal.
