The 1990s saw a flourishing era of rock-and-roll weirdos, showcasing a diverse range of bands beyond the grunge scene. Underground heroes like Alice Donut, post-hardcore legends like Slint, and genre-defying oddballs like Ween pushed boundaries with their music. However, rising to the top of the weird mountain of rock was Primus, a band known for their bizarre lyrics, slap-bass stylings, and unique sound. Formed in the mid-80s by bass virtuoso Les Claypool, Primus quickly connected with a legion of similarly kooky fans.
Primus’s influence in alternative rock radio was solidified with hits like “John The Fisherman,” “Jerry Was A Racecar Driver,” “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” and their best-known song, “My Name Is Mud.” Now, after nearly a decade since their last European performance, Primus is set to headline the 2026 ArcTanGent festival in Bristol, UK, marking their return to the European stage. The festival, known for its ground-breaking sounds, will feature Primus alongside Chelsea Wolfe and Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas.
According to festival organizer James Scarlett, “The stars have aligned for this set of ArcTanGent headliners,” emphasizing the significance of having all three bands on the lineup. Primus’s upcoming performance comes after their last European show in 2017, during which they played the UK’s Roundhouse for a special event. The band had plans to tour Europe as part of their Rush-inspired “A Tribute to Kings” tour but had to cancel.
In 2017, Primus released their concept album, “The Desaturating Seven,” based on the 1978 children’s book “The Rainbow Goblins” by Italian author Ul de Rico. This album followed their 2014 release, “Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble,” a reimagination of the soundtrack to “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” With their unique and eclectic discography, Primus continues to captivate fans and push the boundaries of rock music.
As Primus makes their eagerly anticipated return to the European stage, their presence at the ArcTanGent festival represents a resurgence of their unconventional sound and captivating live performances. The band’s ability to blend eccentricity with musical prowess makes them a truly unforgettable act in the realm of alternative rock.
