The radio waves are buzzing with nostalgia as classic rock lovers from Generation X and Baby Boomers tune in to the sounds of the ’80s. While the term “classic rock” may conjure images of the ’60s and ’70s, it seems that the ’80s have taken over the airwaves.
According to a report by Ultimate Classic Rock, Mediabase, a music industry service, found that the majority of the most-played songs on classic rock radio in 2025 were actually released in the ’80s. Out of the 40 songs on the list, 25 were from the ’80s, 14 were from the ’70s, and only one made the cut from the ’90s.
Claiming the coveted title of the most played classic rock song of 2025 is none other than Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” from their 1986 album “Slippery When Wet.” With over two billion streams on Spotify and over 10 million copies sold in the U.S. alone, it’s no surprise that this anthem continues to dominate the airwaves.
Interestingly, Bon Jovi almost didn’t include “Livin’ on a Prayer” on “Slippery When Wet.” Frontman Jon Bon Jovi revealed that he was initially unsure if the song was a fit for the band’s rock sound, but ultimately decided to include it, much to the delight of fans.
The rest of the top five most played classic rock songs of 2025 also hail from the ’80s, solidifying the decade’s reign on the airwaves. Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” took the second and third spots, followed by Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” at number four. Bon Jovi claimed the fifth spot once again with “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
As we head into 2026, it’s clear that nostalgia for the ’80s is still going strong on the radio. Who knows what other hits from the past will make their mark in the years to come?
In the world of classic rock, it seems that the ’80s have cemented their place as the era of choice for listeners. With iconic hits from Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, and Whitesnake dominating the airwaves, it’s clear that the music of this decade continues to captivate audiences.
