NOFX: 40 Years of [explicit] Up

NOFX, the iconic rock band known for their rebellious spirit, has stirred excitement among their dedicated fan base with some thrilling news. Founder Fat Mike recently made a revealing announcement on a Friday at The Punk Rock Museum’s NOFX exhibition in Las Vegas. The band’s documentary, “40 Years of [explicit] Up,” is currently in post-production, promising an intimate look into the journey of founding members Eric Melvin, Fat Mike, and Erik “Smelly” Sandin. This raw and candid film will trace their evolution from troubled teens struggling with addiction to becoming rockstars. Notably, the documentary will feature seven new NOFX songs exclusive to the film, not accessible on mainstream digital platforms like Spotify or Apple Music.

Discussing the unconventional nature of the documentary, Fat Mike shared in a statement with Rolling Stone, “Most people wouldn’t be okay with releasing a film that shows footage of getting whipped in their dungeon, or their drug use for the past 20 years, or dressing up like a rubber cheap [explicit], or the ambulance ride when they were naked while puking and [explicit] blood…” Directed by James Buddy Day, “40 Years of [explicit] Up” will also include interviews with fellow NOFX members Melvin, Sandin, and Aaron ‘El Hefe’ Abeyta, offering a comprehensive portrayal of the band’s legacy.

Formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, NOFX has maintained a distinct identity by steering clear of major record labels throughout their impressive 42-year career. Rising to prominence in the 1990s punk rock revival, their 1994 album “Punk in Drublic” remains a highlight of their discography. With 15 studio albums, 16 EPs, and numerous singles released between 1983 and 2024, NOFX has left an indelible mark on the music world before officially retiring in 2024. The band’s refusal to conform to industry norms and their commitment to authenticity have endeared them to fans worldwide.

As the eagerly anticipated “40 Years of [explicit] Up” documentary prepares for screenings, scheduled for March 15 and 16 at Brushy Street Commons in Austin, the band’s legacy continues to captivate audiences. With tickets for the limited movie theater screenings set to go on sale on February 20, fans can look forward to a revealing and unfiltered look into the tumultuous yet groundbreaking journey of NOFX. This upcoming showcase of their raw, unapologetic story serves as a testament to their enduring impact on the punk rock scene.
