Myra McQueen and the Legacy of Hollyoaks

As a mainstay on Channel 4’s “Hollyoaks” for over two decades, Myra McQueen, played by Nicole Barber-Lane, has firmly established herself as the matriarch of the McQueen family. With her on-screen son John Paul, portrayed by James Sutton, preparing to exit the show, the series is celebrating the family’s legacy with Barber-Lane once again taking center stage.

In an upcoming special “What If” episode, “Hollyoaks” will delve into an alternate reality where key members of the McQueen family are still alive, exploring how John Paul’s life may have unfolded differently. Reflecting on Myra’s mindset during the special episode, Barber-Lane shared, “Myra’s always on a mission to ensure everyone is safe and taken care of, regardless of where she is in the world.”

Filming the “What If” episode proved to be a joyful experience for Barber-Lane. She expressed, “It was so much fun. I think it reflects the unpredictable nature of life and the enjoyment we can find in being part of a soap. Having some of the McQueens back on set brought such great energy to the scenes.”

Discussing the bond between Myra and John Paul, Barber-Lane emphasized the deep connection between the characters. She remarked, “Myra completely adores John Paul, and their relationship is incredibly close. It’s a beautiful bond that is truly special.”

Barber-Lane believes that the enduring appeal of the McQueen family to viewers lies in the love that underpins their relationships. She noted, “No matter what challenges they face or how much they may argue, the McQueens always have each other’s backs. This mirrors real-life dynamics, where family support is unwavering despite the ups and downs.”

Reflecting on Myra’s evolution as a parent, Barber-Lane highlighted the character’s growth over time. “Myra has transitioned from being the fierce protector to a more composed figure who steps in when necessary,” she explained. “She has become calmer and more measured in her approach.”

The “What If” episode will also feature the return of familiar faces from “Hollyoaks” past, including David Tag, Gemma Merna, Hollie-Jay Bowes, Leah Hacket, and Annie Wallace. Working with them again was a delightful experience for Barber-Lane. She enthused, “I had an absolute ball. It was wonderful to have them back on set.”

Looking back on her time as a McQueen, Barber-Lane fondly recalled cherished memories of chippy teas, lively family discussions, and the warmth of being with her on-screen family. When asked which McQueen she relates to most, she humorously replied, “I’ve probably embodied each McQueen at some point in my life.”

Being part of the McQueen family has held profound significance for Barber-Lane, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with talented industry professionals across various roles. Reflecting on her experience, she remarked, “I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of the McQueen family and to collaborate with such amazing individuals in the industry. It’s been a truly remarkable journey for me.”
