Exciting News for MTN Zakhele Futhi Shareholders
After almost a decade, MTN Zakhele Futhi (MTNZF) is gearing up to distribute returns to its shareholders starting July 28, 2025. Despite facing market fluctuations over the years, the scheme was able to provide a modest return to investors.
Launched in 2016, MTNZF aimed to increase Black ownership in South Africa by allowing individuals and Black-owned entities to participate in the company’s growth through shareholding. The scheme, supported by external funding, enabled broader participation than individual contributions alone.
Each shareholder is set to receive R20 ($1.10) per share initially, with an additional R2 to R3 per share expected later, totalling R22 to R23 ($1.20 – $1.27) per share. This offers a full return of their initial investment along with a modest gain.
After selling most of its MTN shares, MTNZF is focusing on settling debts and distributing remaining funds to investors before eventually being delisted from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The decision to wind down the scheme was made to safeguard shareholder value in light of improving market conditions.
Despite facing challenges, MTNZF was able to secure a financial return for its shareholders. Reflecting on its journey, the scheme emphasised its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in the investment landscape.
Moving forward, MTNZF will operate as a cash-only entity dedicated to finalising distributions to shareholders. Once this process is complete, the scheme will be delisted from the JSE and deregistered.
