Midwest and Northeast Brace for Series of Alberta Clipper Systems

As winter descends upon the Midwest and Northeast, a series of Alberta clipper systems are poised to unleash quick bursts of snow, fierce winds, and bone-chilling temperatures. This meteorological dance begins on Monday, December 8, and extends through the upcoming weekend, as predicted by the National Weather Service and AccuWeather.

Alberta Clippers, as explained by The Weather Channel, are swift-moving low-pressure systems originating from Alberta, Canada. Racing southeast through the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast between October and March, these clipper systems are most prevalent in the heart of winter. Characterized by rapid snow flurries, powerful winds reaching up to 60 mph, and an influx of frigid Arctic air that can send temperatures plummeting by 30 degrees in mere hours.

The first clipper is expected to arrive Monday night, ushering in 1-3 inches of snow for many areas, with the Arrowhead region of Minnesota facing 3-6 inches. As the snow tapers off by early Tuesday, a brief respite precedes the arrival of a stronger second system on Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.

This second clipper is anticipated to pack the most punch of the week. AccuWeather meteorologists predict the storm will track from southwestern Canada into the Northern Plains on Tuesday before barreling into the Great Lakes later that night and spreading rain and snow across the Northeast on Wednesday.

A significant swath of snow totaling 3-6 inches is expected to blanket regions from northern North Dakota to far northern New York and Vermont, with localized areas possibly seeing higher accumulations. Heavier snowfall amounts of 6-12 inches are possible in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, and southern Ontario, with potential for up to 15 inches in certain areas.

In addition to the snowfall, widespread wind hazards are projected from Montana and Wyoming to Wisconsin and Illinois, with gusts of up to 70 mph in higher elevations, possibly leading to blowing snow and challenging travel conditions. The NWS has issued Winter Storm Warnings for areas where 6 inches or more of snowfall is likely.

As the week progresses, more clipper systems are on the horizon, with the potential for additional snowfall to sweep through the region. Despite the lack of massive snowstorms due to the fast movement of these systems, each clipper will reinforce the grip of Arctic air across the affected areas. Highs may struggle to reach the single digits in cities like Minneapolis, Madison, and Chicago, with subzero overnight lows in the forecast.

With multiple opportunities for snowfall and hazardous travel conditions throughout the week, residents are advised to exercise caution and prepare for challenging road conditions. Travel impacts are expected to be most severe Tuesday night through Wednesday morning and again over the weekend with the arrival of a third clipper system.
