In a recent episode of the podcast “The Rest Is History,” music legend Paul McCartney shared a hilarious memory involving his late Beatles bandmate George Harrison. The legendary duo recalled a teenage adventure hitchhiking down South to Wales, an experience that inspired a song on McCartney’s upcoming solo album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane.”
During their journey, McCartney and Harrison hitched a ride on an electric milk float, which only traveled at about four miles per hour. In a moment of teenage humor, Harrison opted to sit on the battery located between the driver and passenger seats. McCartney chuckled as he recounted the memory, explaining, “The driver was sitting on the right-hand side, then there was a battery in the middle, and then there was the passenger seat on the left-hand side, and George sat on the battery.”
As fate would have it, Harrison’s jeans had a zip on the back pocket that connected with the battery, resulting in quite a shocking experience. “The zip connected up and the battery had given him a bolt,” McCartney recalled. “And later, when we got to our B&B, he showed me. Yeah, he had a great big zip tattooed into his bum.”
The amusing anecdote was recently brought up by George’s widow, Olivia, who mistakenly believed the incident had happened to McCartney. Reflecting on the mix-up, McCartney shared, “I said, ‘It wasn’t it me, it was George!’ But I think it’s amazing the way memory does that. It can just morph.”
Unfortunately, George Harrison passed away on November 29, 2001, at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer. The former Beatles guitarist left behind a legacy of music that continues to inspire generations.
The whimsical tale shared by McCartney offers a rare glimpse into the camaraderie and humor shared between bandmates on their journey towards stardom. It serves as a reminder that even legendary musicians like The Beatles had their share of quirky adventures and memories that would shape their musical journeys.
