Matthew Gray Gubler, known for his role in “Criminal Minds,” is making a return to CBS with the upcoming series “Einstein.” In this new show, Gubler portrays the titular character, Lewis Einstein, a genius much like his previous character, Dr. Spencer Reid. The show, described as a drama with comedic undertones, is an adaptation of a German series by Andy Breckman, the creator of “Monk.”
Originally set to air in the Fall 2025-2026 season, “Einstein” has been moved to the 2026-2027 season to allow for further development. Gubler’s character, Lewis, is a popular professor at Princeton known for his irregularity in showing up for class. Despite his irreverent and misguided nature, Lewis’s intelligence and famous name bring weight to his life. Using his gift to help solve homicides offers him direction and purpose.
Joining Gubler in the cast is Melissa Fumero as Teri, a Detective Inspector for the New Jersey State Police. Originally, Rosa Salazar was set to play the role, but due to the series delay, Fumero took over the character. Teri is described as sharp, disciplined, and conflicted about working with Professor Einstein.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor stars as Captain Frost, a veteran police officer counting down the days until retirement. With ten thousand hours logged in the field, Captain Frost partners with Lewis Einstein and Detective Inspector Teri to crack the most puzzling cases.
The official synopsis of “Einstein” reads, “Brilliant but directionless, the great-grandson of Albert Einstein spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law. Pressed into service to help a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases, Lewis Einstein embarks on a new chapter in his life.”
“Einstein” will be available to watch on CBS and stream on Paramount+ when the 2026-2027 TV season kicks off later this year.
