Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair

In a much-anticipated return to the screen, the recent Hulu revival of Malcolm in the Middle served as a wonderful blend of both a revival and a reunion, bringing back beloved characters like Frankie Muniz and Bryan Cranston two decades after the show originally bid farewell on FOX. The four-episode stint delighted fans with surprise appearances from familiar faces, including Abe and the poker buddies who never quite left Hal’s side, as well as Francis and his mischievous military school pals. Even a special cameo from three quirky “Krelboynes” added to the nostalgic charm of the revival.

Speaking with Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer and executive producer Tracy Katsky Boomer, it was revealed that Bryan Cranston played a major role in convincing the original cast to reunite. Despite not being able to bring back every past cast member, the Boomer duo managed to assemble as many beloved actors as possible for this special reunion.

One notable absence in the revival was Erik Per Sullivan, who chose not to reprise his role as Dewey. However, newcomer Caleb Ellsworth-Clark seamlessly stepped into the role, impressing viewers with his uncanny resemblance to Per Sullivan and capturing the essence of Dewey’s character with ease. Even as hopes remained for Sullivan’s return, Ellsworth-Clark’s portrayal breathed new life into the character for the revival.

Dewey’s part in the four-episode revival was predominantly virtual, as his musical talents had taken him across Europe, where he kept in touch with his family through video calls. Linwood’s last-minute pitch to Sullivan to return for a brief appearance ultimately went unanswered, leaving Ellsworth-Clark to shine in the role of Dewey.

Despite the absence of Per Sullivan, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair managed to capture the essence of the original series while still offering a fresh take on this beloved family. The revival’s celebration of the past, along with the introduction of new talent like Ellsworth-Clark, made for a memorable viewing experience that left fans both nostalgic and excited for the future of this iconic show.
