Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches, and all around the world, people are curating the perfect love-song playlist. Among the many tracks that deserve a spot on this playlist, one stands out as a timeless classic: “Islands in the Stream” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.
Penned by the Bee Gees, this ’80s country duet marked the first collaboration between Rogers and Parton. Their on-stage chemistry was electric, their harmonies magical, and the song itself has stood the test of time as one of the most iconic country tracks still relevant today.
Released in 1983 on Rogers’ album “Eyes That See in the Dark,” “Islands in the Stream” quickly climbed the charts, even knocking Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track went on to achieve Triple Platinum status in the U.S. after selling over three million copies.
Interestingly, “Islands in the Stream” was originally intended to be an R&B track, not a country song. Bee Gees frontman Barry Gibb brought it to Rogers, who initially needed some convincing to record it.
In an interview with People, Rogers shared, “It all started when Barry Gibb wrote ‘Islands in the Stream,’ and he gave it to me to record — he was producing an album. I finally said, ‘Barry, I don’t even like this song anymore,’ and he said, ‘You know what we need? We need Dolly Parton.'”
Parton, who was in the studio at the time, added her magic touch to the song, transforming it into a classic that would go on to be celebrated on numerous “best of” lists.
“Islands in the Stream” has been honored as one of the best country duets of all time by CMT and Billboard’s list of Top 25 Country Love Song Duets of All Time. The success of the track led Rogers and Parton to collaborate on more duets, including 1985’s “Real Love” and a joint Christmas album.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, “Islands in the Stream” serves as a reminder of the timeless power of love songs that transcend generations and genres.
