Legend of the Seas: A Cultural Journey Through Art

In a sea of cookie-cutter cruise ships, Royal Caribbean’s latest vessel, Legend of the Seas, stands out for more than just its size or amenities. Set to make its debut in 2026, this ship is breaking the mold with a fresh approach to onboard design that celebrates real artists, real places, and real stories.

Instead of treating art as mere background decoration, Royal Caribbean is elevating its Artist Discovery Program on Legend of the Seas. Emerging artists from the Caribbean and Central America have been commissioned to create original, large-scale murals that will adorn the ship from bow to stern. These artworks will not only showcase the beauty and vibrancy of the regions the ship visits but will also immerse guests in a cultural experience like no other.

“We’re excited to expand the program to include emerging artists from Central America alongside the Caribbean and increase the number of locations for large-scale murals on Legend from four to six, creating more opportunities for artists to highlight the diverse destinations we visit through their work,” says Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean.

The selected artists will draw inspiration from their home regions to create unique pieces that have never been seen before. These murals are not meant to be distant objects of admiration but rather to coexist with guests as they navigate the ship, transforming everyday spaces into vivid reflections of the cultures found beyond the port.

Legend of the Seas marks Royal Caribbean’s latest venture into blending travel and art. Previous versions of the program appeared on Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, as well as at Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau. By featuring artists from diverse backgrounds, the ship aims to provide a platform for creative expression that reaches millions of travelers throughout its lifetime.

Scheduled to launch in 2026 with sailings in the Western Mediterranean followed by a Caribbean debut later that year, Legend of the Seas promises to deliver an unforgettable experience that connects guests with the destinations they visit on a deeper level. While the ship may boast plenty of headline-worthy features, the addition of these meaningful murals could prove to be one of its most enduring legacies—a testament to the power of art in forging connections across cultures.

As Legend of the Seas sets sail, it offers travelers a unique opportunity to engage with art in a way that goes beyond mere decoration. By showcasing the talent and creativity of artists from the Caribbean and Central America, the ship invites guests to embark on a cultural journey that transcends borders and celebrates the beauty of diversity.
