Lara Spencer Mourns the Passing of Her Beloved Mother, Carolyn von Seelen

Lara Spencer, beloved host of Good Morning America, is mourning the recent passing of her mother, Carolyn von Seelen. The heartbreaking news was shared by Spencer in an emotional Instagram post on Monday, where she announced that her mother had passed away at the age of 85 on Friday, February 13. Von Seelen had bravely battled cancer, specifically glioblastoma, since being diagnosed in 2023.

In the post, Spencer, 56, shared a touching montage of photos capturing the essence of her mother’s life, including moments spent with members of the Good Morning America family like Michael Strahan and Robin Roberts.

“If you were lucky enough to meet my mom you know that smile that lit up every room she walked into,” Spencer began in the post. She went on to describe her mother’s courage, resilience, optimism, faith, and love for her family, highlighting the comforting sayings her mother often shared to navigate life’s challenges.

“Our loving mom, grandmother to 12 and great-grandmother to 4 left us on Friday the 13TH surrounded by her children and her beloved rescue dog to reunite with my Dad and our sister Pamela,” Spencer shared, expressing her eternal love and gratitude for her mother.

Colleagues from ABC and other morning programs, like Jenna Bush Hager and Ginger Zee, offered their condolences on Spencer’s post, sharing messages of love and support during this difficult time. Rebecca Jarvis from GMA also shared heartfelt words, reflecting on the special bond she had with von Seelen.
