Sophia Umansky, 25-year-old daughter of reality stars Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky, has publicly discussed a side effect she’s experiencing while taking the weight-loss medication Mounjaro.
In a TikTok video posted on Wednesday, April 30, Sophia revealed she has been using the prescription drug for the past four months to lose weight.
Mounjaro, also known as tirzepatide or Zepbound, is approved for Type 2 diabetes but is also effective for weight loss by reducing appetite and improving the body’s processing of sugar and fat.
Sophia shared that one noticeable side effect has been hair loss. “I am very lucky that I have so much hair, because at the rate that I’ve been losing hair, I’m gonna be bald in about a week,” she joked.
She explained that this “dramatic hair loss situation” started about three to four weeks ago.
While her hair looked styled in the video, she also showed photos of significant amounts of hair accumulating in her bathroom shower and sink daily.
Sophia clarified that she doesn’t believe the hair loss is a direct reaction to the medication itself.
Instead, she suspects it’s a result of rapid weight loss caused by the drug, combined with not consuming enough vitamins and protein.
She assured viewers that she is now actively working on taking vitamins and increasing her protein intake to combat this side effect.
Her explanation aligns with a condition called telogen effluvium, where hair loss can occur due to the stress the body experiences during rapid weight loss. Sophia also mentioned using hair growth peptides, collagen, and vitamins to help.
Her video received various responses from TikTok users, including both supportive comments and suggestions for hair loss treatments and further medical checks, such as thyroid testing.
