Kenny Ortega: The Creative Force Behind “Gilmore Girls”

As the Emmy-winning producer and choreographer behind the iconic Disney Channel “High School Musical” franchise, Kenny Ortega is a name synonymous with creativity and innovation in the entertainment industry. However, in 2002, he surprised audiences by directing the classic “Gilmore Girls” episode, “A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving.” This episode, which originally aired on Nov. 26, 2002, on the WB network, followed Lorelei (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) as they navigated four distinct Thanksgiving celebrations.

Ortega, now 75, recently revealed in a 2025 interview with The Television Academy that he has yet to watch the finished episode. Despite this, he is eagerly looking forward to a viewing with his family, including his sister and great-nieces who are avid fans of the “Gilmore Girls” franchise.

For Ortega, being invited by “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino to direct episodes was a testament to his unique talent. Throughout his tenure on the show between 2002 and 2006, Ortega directed a total of 12 episodes, showcasing his ability to seamlessly blend choreography with storytelling.

Working with the talented “Gilmore Girls” cast was a highlight for Ortega, particularly reuniting with Kelly Bishop, whom he had previously worked with on “Dirty Dancing.” He praised the dedication and intelligence of actors like Lauren and Alexis, highlighting the intense work ethic required for the fast-paced nature of episodic TV production.

Not limited to just the Thanksgiving episode, Ortega also directed the now-iconic Season 3 episode “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” which featured the memorable Stars Hollow dance marathon. Sherman-Palladino herself commended Ortega’s directorial skills, labeling him as a “rockstar” for his contributions to the show.

Throughout his time on set, Ortega formed a deep bond with the cast, particularly with seasoned actors like Sally Struthers and Liz Torres. Their shared experiences and mutual respect for each other’s craft created a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere on set, resulting in memorable episodes that have stood the test of time.

As a true master of his craft, Ortega’s foray into directing “Gilmore Girls” was a testament to his versatility and creativity. His unique vision and dedication to storytelling continue to inspire fans and industry insiders alike, solidifying his status as a respected figure in the world of entertainment.
