The atmosphere was electric as legendary guitarist Keith Richards unveiled a rare opportunity for fans and collectors to own a piece of rock history. With the announcement of a new collaboration with Gibson, the Rolling Stones co-founder is releasing two limited-edition recreations of his iconic 1960 Gibson ES-355 worldwide. Handcrafted by Gibson Custom in Nashville and developed in close collaboration with Richards himself, these guitars replicate one of the most recognizable instruments of his storied career.
Richards’ black 1960 ES-355 is often considered a holy grail among guitarists, with only 50 Collector’s Editions produced. Each guitar is signed by Richards on both the f-hole label and the back of the headstock, and will be exclusively available through Gibson.com and the Gibson Garage locations in Nashville and London. An additional 100 Signed Label versions—signed on the f-hole label only—will be sold through select Gibson Custom dealers and Gibson Garage stores.
For over six decades, Richards, known as the “Human Riff,” has been a rhythmic force in the rock world, with his 1960 ES-355 playing a crucial role in his sound. Richards first integrated the model into his arsenal in 1969 during recording sessions for albums like Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St., and it has remained a staple on the band’s tours since 1997. Describing the instrument’s significance, Richards stated, “This is my standard-tuning six-string; this is the other side of my thing…Put it through just about any amp, and it will sound the way you want it, because this has so much more room for expression.”
The release of these limited-edition guitars comes on the heels of Richards checking in with fans at the start of the year. In a video message shared on January 2, the 82-year-old expressed well wishes for the upcoming year, creating a sense of warmth and connection amidst a unique time. While recent reports indicate that plans for a Rolling Stones stadium tour have been paused, Richards’ latest collaboration reinforces the enduring impact of his music even in times of pause.
Richards’ collaboration with Gibson is more than just a release of guitars; it’s a moment that celebrates the longevity and influence of his music. Through his partnership with Gibson, Richards is giving fans a chance to own a piece of his rock legacy, ensuring that his music will continue to resonate for years to come.
