Karen Grassle Reflects on “Little House on the Prairie” Character Ma Ingalls’ Journey Through Menopause

Karen Grassle, best known as the beloved Ma Ingalls from “Little House on the Prairie,” recently shared a candid moment from her iconic show that still doesn’t sit quite right with her. At the December 2025 “Little House on the Prairie” Cast Reunion in Simi Valley, CA, Grassle, now 83, reflected on filming the Season 7 episode “I Do Again.”

In this particular episode, Ma Ingalls and her daughter, Laura (played by Melissa Gilbert), both experience pregnancy symptoms. Ma, yearning for a son after having four daughters, is devastated to discover that she is not pregnant but entering menopause instead. The storyline took a toll on Grassle, who was in her late 30s during filming, as she struggled to connect with her character’s struggles.

“I was like, ‘Give me a break,'” Grassle recalled about her character’s journey through menopause. She found it challenging to relate to Ma’s crisis about her childbearing years coming to an end, fearing that the storyline would hinder her career as an actress who had not yet turned 40.

Despite her reservations about certain storylines, Grassle did find joy in portraying Ma Ingalls, especially in scenes where she could showcase physical acting. One of her favorite episodes was “A Matter of Faith” from Season 2, where Caroline battles a life-threatening infection after cutting her leg on a wagon. Grassle appreciated the opportunity to break free from Ma’s typically restrained persona in this particular episode.

Overall, Grassle’s nuanced portrayal of Ma Ingalls throughout the series highlighted her versatility as an actress, showcasing both her emotional depth and physical agility. While certain storylines may not have resonated with her personally, Grassle’s dedication to her craft shone through in every episode of “Little House on the Prairie.”
