Kansas City Chiefs Set to Move to New Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas

The Kansas City Chiefs are making a bold move, leaving their longtime home in Kansas City, Missouri for a brand new stadium across state lines in Kansas City, Kansas. The Associated Press reports that the NFL team’s new home is projected to be ready for the 2031 season.

Lawmakers in Kansas reached a unanimous decision on Monday, December 22 to use STAR bonds to fund the construction of the estimated $3 billion domed stadium. This funding will cover up to 70% of the stadium’s cost, to be repaid through state sales and liquor tax revenues generated within the stadium’s vicinity.

Since 1972, the Chiefs have called Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri home. However, with their lease set to expire at the end of the 2031 NFL season, the team will be making the transition to their new state-of-the-art facility.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, alongside team president Mark Donovan and other officials, expressed their excitement over the partnership with the state of Kansas to bring this innovative stadium project to life. In a statement shared on Monday, Hunt emphasized the legacy of innovation and fan-centric approach that has been a hallmark of the organization.

Governor Laura Kelly also chimed in, describing the announcement as truly historic and a game-changer for the state of Kansas. She expressed pride in welcoming the Chiefs to the state, highlighting the impact the move will have for generations to come.

The proposed location for the new stadium is in Wyandotte County, Kansas, with the Chiefs’ headquarters and training facility planned for Olathe, Kansas. Situated roughly 25 miles west of Arrowhead Stadium, the new location near the Kansas Speedway and The Legends entertainment district is sure to draw fans from near and far.

Overall, the Chiefs’ upcoming move to Kansas signifies a new era for the team and the state. With a cutting-edge stadium on the horizon, fans can look forward to an elevated experience that will solidify Kansas City’s standing in the sports world.
