Julie Bowen has opened up about the media’s attempts to create a rift between her and Sofia Vergara during their time on Modern Family.
On Jennie Garth’s I Choose Me podcast, Bowen reflected on the pressure to pit the two actresses against each other, drawing parallels with Garth’s own experience with Shannen Doherty on Beverly Hills, 90210.
“I felt it on Modern Family. The press kept trying to make me and Sofia sort of Betty and Veronica,” she said.
She continued, “I know they did that with you and Shannen [Doherty]. I mean, I remember it.
“The Modern Family alum then recalled her surprise at finding out that Garth and Doherty were actually friends after watching a morning show segment of them shopping, realizing that “we’re not getting real life in the press.”
Bowen expressed disappointment in the press’s efforts to create a false narrative of a feud, fueled by a scarcity mindset that assumes only one woman can succeed at a time.
“There’s this scarcity mindset that there’s only one woman that can be happy at a time,” continued the actress. “I was like, ‘Oh no, I love Sofía. I love how different we are. She is funny and self-effacing and bawdy, and she loves life, and she loves dancing and eating cake and all these things.’”
Instead, Bowen celebrated her genuine friendship with Vergara, appreciating their differences and shared joys.
Bowen said that she “learned so much from being around [Vergara] about what it is to be a really powerful, completely in herself woman.”
In 2016, Julie Bowen addressed a fabricated media narrative about her being “icy” to Sofia Vergara due to jealousy over her fame during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Bowen revealed that she had actually reached out to Vergara, seeking advice on how to respond to the false story.
Vergara’s humorous response was to suggest Bowen borrow her blouse, showcasing their lighthearted and playful friendship.
The actresses’ bond has been strong, with Bowen recently celebrating Vergara’s 52nd birthday on Instagram with a heartfelt tribute.
Vergara reciprocated the affection by reposting the photo and expressing her love for Bowen.
By refusing to engage with the fabricated drama, Bowen upheld a supportive and empowering dynamic, rejecting the notion that one woman’s success must come at the expense of another.
