Jonny Greenwood and Paul Thomas Anderson Demand Removal of Music from “Melania”

The release of the documentary “Melania” on Jan. 30 has sparked controversy for a variety of reasons. Adding to the divisiveness, renowned musician Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and The Smile, along with director Paul Thomas Anderson, have demanded the removal of a piece from Greenwood’s score for the film “Phantom Thread” from the controversial documentary.

Greenwood and Anderson made their request known in a statement to Variety, citing a breach of the composer agreement due to the unauthorized use of Greenwood’s music in “Melania.”

“Phantom Thread,” a period drama starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps, and Lesley Manville, features a score composed entirely by Greenwood. The musician, who has collaborated with Anderson on several projects, including “The Master” and “There Will Be Blood,” expressed his desire for the removal of his music from “Melania.”

Despite the request from Greenwood and Anderson, there has been no response from Melania or the documentary team at this time.

In a podcast interview in 2018, Greenwood shared insights into the process of creating the score for “Phantom Thread,” revealing that director Paul Thomas Anderson pushed for a romantic and lush sound, contrary to Greenwood’s initial vision. The collaboration resulted in a nomination for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for “Phantom Thread.”

This recent demand for the removal of Greenwood’s music from “Melania” adds another layer to the controversy surrounding the documentary’s release, highlighting the creative and legal complexities involved in music licensing and copyright.
