Jelly Roll has always had a sense of humor about the reactions to his face tattoos, especially when his daughter’s friends were curious about them when they were little. In a recent interview with Taste of Country, the country star shared a lighthearted story about how he used to explain his ink to his daughter Bailee’s friends when they were in kindergarten.
“When she was in kindergarten, all of her little friends would ask, ‘What is all that stuff on your face?'” Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, recalled. “I would tell them, ‘You won’t believe this, I only draw this on when I come to see y’all so y’all are excited about it.'”
As Bailee grew older, the jokes about his tattoos shifted to more serious conversations. Jelly Roll shared that some parents were hesitant to let their kids spend time at their house because of his appearance. However, he pushed back against the idea that his tattoos are about seeking attention, explaining to Men’s Health that it’s actually the opposite.
“The way shame sometimes shows itself is not always the way we expect it to be,” he said. “We think shame is somebody in the streets on their knees, with their head down. But shame sometimes is pride.”
Jelly Roll has been undergoing a significant personal transformation over the past year, losing over 275 pounds, shaving his face for the first time in a decade, and adopting a healthier lifestyle focused on sobriety and movement. This journey has had a profound impact on his marriage, as he candidly shared on The Joe Rogan Experience in December.
“My sex life was horrible,” he admitted, reflecting on how his weight once affected intimacy with his wife, Bunnie XO. Today, he describes a completely different lifestyle centered on showing up fully for his family.
The evolution of Jelly Roll’s appearance and lifestyle reflects a deeper journey towards self-acceptance and growth. Through humor and honesty, he has navigated the challenges of societal judgment and personal transformation with grace and authenticity.
