The moment Joe Biden endorsed Kamala Harris for president, social media buzzed with excitement – and a hint of humor.
“Maya Rudolph’s SNL return is a lock, right?” fans joked.
And it turns out, they were spot on! Rudolph is indeed repeating her role as Harris on Saturday Night Live during the forthcoming season of the longrunning comedy program.
The news of Rudolph’s comeback to the show was initially reported by Deadline.
Thanks to a timely delay in production on her Apple TV+ series Loot, Rudolph’s schedule has opened up to accommodate her SNL gig.
With both shows produced by Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, the stars have aligned for Rudolph’s return to the SNL stage.
Maya Rudolph has a history of hilariously portraying Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live, first as a presidential candidate and then as Joe Biden’s trusty VP pick.
She won an Emmy for her portrayal of the vice-president-turned-presumptive presidential-candidate during her 2020 run as Harris.
She has referred to embodying such a significant political figure as “a rite of passage” on the show.
Her most recent appearance as Harris was in March 2021, alongside Martin Short as Doug Emhoff – watch the sidesplitting sketch below!
Rudolph revealed that in 2022, she dined with Harris after a joint fundraiser with Amy Poehler and Hillary Clinton.
During her chat with Jimmy Fallon, she mentioned that Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, was quite thrilled about having “two Kamalas” around.
Rudolph was a cast member on Saturday Night Live between 2000 and 2007 and has since had roles in films such as Bridesmaids, Sisters and Wine Country.
SNL has a long tradition of bringing in big names to play political figures.
Who can forget Tina Fey’s iconic Sarah Palin impression in 2008 or Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump antics during his presidency (now expertly handled by James Austin Johnson)?
Meanwhile, the Biden impression has been passed around like a baton, from Jason Sudeikis during the Obama era to Jim Carrey and currently shared by Alex Moffat and Johnson.
SNL will kick off its impressive 50th season on Sept. 28.
