I recently dove headfirst into the world of K-dramas and K-rom-coms, and I have to admit, I’m thoroughly enjoying every moment of it. Lately, I’ve found myself feeling a bit uninspired by the predictable TV-movie rom-com formula and was in search of something fresh and new to watch. Despite being Chinese and more familiar with Mandarin-based series, I made the decision to switch on a K-rom-com and instantly fell in love.
I also came across Netflix’s extensive collection of K-dramas, C-dramas, and T-dramas (Taiwanese, for those wondering), all with subtitles and most with English dubbed voiceovers if desired. For those looking to ease into foreign-language series on Netflix, I highly recommend starting with a show like “XO, Kitty.” A spinoff of the popular “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” movies, “XO, Kitty” has been a hit on Netflix for good reason. While the English-language series does feature some Korean-language scenes, they are typically brief and always subtitled.
“XO, Kitty” follows the story of Kitty Song-Covey (Anna Cathcart) as she embarks on a study abroad journey in Seoul, Korea at K.I.S.S. (Korean Independent School of Seoul). Initially arriving to surprise her pen-pal boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-yeong), only to discover he is involved with someone else, Kitty decides to stay and immerse herself in a new country and culture, making new friends along the way.
In the upcoming third season of “XO, Kitty,” Kitty returns for her final year at KISS with plans for a meaningful senior year filled with memories with friends, bonding with relatives in Korea, and making significant decisions about her future. However, unexpected revelations throw her carefully laid-out plans and relationships off course, forcing Kitty to embrace the unforeseen.
Season 3 of “XO, Kitty” is set to premiere on Thursday, Apr. 2, on Netflix. As a spinoff of the “To All the Boys” movies on Netflix, “XO, Kitty” offers a fresh and engaging perspective on love, friendship, and life experiences.
Overall, “XO, Kitty” provides a captivating and heartwarming glimpse into the life of a young woman navigating love, relationships, and self-discovery in a foreign land. Its unique blend of cultural insights, relatable characters, and engaging storytelling make it a must-watch for fans of romantic comedies and coming-of-age tales.
