‘I Own What I’ve Done, I Want To Do Better’ – Oprah Winfrey Regrets Role Played in Diet Culture

Earlier this year, American TV personality, Oprah Winfrey announced that she would be stepping down from the Weight Watchers board after previously revealing her use of weight loss medication.

During a recent live stream, Oprah took responsibility for her role in diet culture while stating that she wants to do better.

According to Variety, the TV star shared her opinions during the Weightwatchers’ “Making the shift: A new way to think about weight” livestream.

She said, “I want to acknowledge that I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years.

“I’ve been a major contributor to it. I cannot tell you how many weight loss shows and makeovers I have done and they have been a staple since I’ve been working on television”.

Oprah further recalled a moment from her talk show in 1988 when she rolled a wagon of fat onto the stage and referred to it as one of her “ biggest regrets.”

She continued, “It sent a message that starving yourself with a liquid diet and set a standard for people watching that I, nor anybody else could uphold.

“I own what I’ve done and now I want to do better”.
