However, Holland America Line has unveiled developments that suggest the industry is finally acknowledging that traveling solo shouldn’t equate to confined spaces. In a massive fleet-wide initiative known as Holland America Evolution, the line is undergoing a comprehensive transformation of six of its most popular ships. Spanning from new dining venues to revitalized public areas, one of the most notable updates for solo adventurers is the introduction of Solo Verandah staterooms.
Beginning with the Oosterdam in Fall 2027, the ship will introduce 30 purpose-built cabins tailored specifically for single occupants. The distinctive aspect of these cabins is their spaciousness, offering 200 square feet of living area along with private balconies. This shift marks a significant departure from the absence of dedicated solo inventory previously available on the ship, enabling solo travelers to finally relish in those classic “coffee on the balcony in your robe” moments without the burden of paying for a two-person room.

This investment enables us to introduce new experiences and venues to the fleet, include Pinnacle Class favorites like Grand Dutch Café, and create fresh stateroom categories tailored to contemporary travel needs, all while maintaining the trademark Holland America experience.”
These designs align with the modern “work from anywhere” ethos, featuring dedicated workspaces and sleek, glass-walled showers in each room. The emphasis on solo travel also extends to the debut of the Grand Dutch Café on the Oosterdam, representing a social hub on the ship. Resembling a traditional European street café, this locale provides a relaxed setting for solo travelers to enjoy a snack, specialty coffee, or local craft beer without the constraints of a timed reservation.
The incorporation of 76 new staterooms, including the Bridgeview suites, on the Oosterdam underscores Holland America Line’s confidence in providing increased choice and privacy for modern cruisers.
