Heineken Partners with WhatsApp to Spark Genuine Connections Over a Cold Beer

Heineken has joined forces with WhatsApp to introduce an innovative technology aimed at fostering genuine connections between people, all over a cold beer, naturally.

The unexpected collaboration was sparked by survey data indicating that individuals are becoming increasingly absorbed in their phones and utilizing technology, especially through voice notes, to facilitate meaningful interactions. After analyzing global data it commissioned, Heineken felt inspired to promote face-to-face mingling. What better way for a beer brand to achieve this than by partnering with a major tech company to offer fans complimentary beer, in exchange for a voice note?

Nabil Nasser, global head of Heineken, playfully hinted, “Just like we all know meetings that ‘could have been an email,’ we’re now seeing voice notes that ‘could have been a Heineken.’ Voice notes can feel more personal than reading a message, but our research indicates the importance of ensuring they don’t become lengthy monologues. Genuine two-way conversations are key.”

Heineken has introduced a new WhatsApp bot, named ‘Could have been a Heineken,’ that incentivizes people to swap lengthy voice notes for an in-person catch-up over a beer. The objective is not only to encourage consumers to drink more of their beer but also to revive the art of conversation and discard superficial messages.

Research revealed a startling 88% of participants admitting to forgetting the content of voice notes, while over half (55%) confessed to never listening to the notes at all.

The Euro-style light lager’s new technology is currently in its initial phase, with the pilot launch taking place in Brazil, the country where the most voice notes are exchanged. The process involves users aged 18 and above, registered on WhatsApp, sending a minimum three-minute voice note to the bot to receive a voucher for a free Heineken beer and recommendations for local meeting spots.

Heineken has not disclosed plans for expanding access to the bot or details on the fate of participants’ voice notes. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.
