Guest Behavior at Disneyland: The Hidden Cause of Ride Shutdowns

The dimming of a beloved Disneyland attraction in the middle of the day usually signals mechanical issues or sensor malfunctions. However, a surprising revelation has been made that points to the guests themselves as the culprits behind these interruptions. During a recent media briefing reported by Mickey Visit, Natalie Katzka, Director of Attractions Engineering Services at Disneyland, shared that a significant portion of ride shutdowns in fiscal year 2025, 13% to be exact, were caused by guest behavior – a notable increase from the historical average of 10%.

The problem extends beyond simple rudeness; it involves physics. Katzka highlighted incidents where guests’ loose articles, such as phones, mouse ears, water bottles, or backpacks, falling from ride vehicles in motion, leading to unnecessary delays and frustrating evacuations.

To address this issue, Disneyland has implemented two key rule changes this spring to empower guests to take responsibility for their belongings.

At Disneyland Park, the “no phones” policy on Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is now strictly enforced. The trackless technology of the ride is sensitive, and a dropped phone can cause serious damage to the vehicles. Cast members now ensure that guests do not start the ride with their phones in hand or improperly stowed.

Over at Disney California Adventure, the rise in popularity of heavy water bottles, like Stanley, has posed a safety hazard on the Incredicoaster. To mitigate this risk, guests are no longer allowed to ride with loose water bottles. Additionally, a dedicated shelf has been installed at the loading station for riders to leave their drinkware before boarding.

By proactively addressing common guest behavior issues, Disney aims to minimize downtime and ensure that a minor mistake doesn’t disrupt the experience for other guests in line.

In contrast, Universal Epic Universe has taken a high-tech approach to guest behavior with stringent loose article rules on their rides, including facial recognition lockers at Stardust Racers to ensure that nothing disrupts the ride experience.

Overall, these initiatives demonstrate theme parks’ commitment to guest safety and operational efficiency while also emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit for all.
