Ghana Bar Association Elects Efua Ghartey As Its First-Ever Female President

Efua Ghartey, a seasoned legal practitioner, has made history as the first woman to be elected President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). The election occurred at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where Ghartey secured 1,208 votes, surpassing her opponent, Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who received 1,060 votes.

In her acceptance speech, Ghartey expressed her deep gratitude and a strong commitment to advancing the legal profession in Ghana. “I am humbled and honoured to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association. This is indeed a new chapter, as the Bar, for the first time, has placed its trust in female leadership,” she said.

She continued, “We will work tirelessly to make you proud. We will ensure that you never regret this decision. Moving forward, we ask for your prayers and support as we undertake this responsibility together.” Ghartey emphasized her dedication to safeguarding the rule of law, advocating for the interests of lawyers, and promoting justice in the country.

Ghartey’s victory is particularly significant as she had previously come close to winning the presidency, narrowly losing to past Presidents Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo by margins of 67 and 65 votes, respectively. With more than two decades of experience in the legal field and having served as the immediate past chair of the Greater Accra branch of the GBA, her election marks a major milestone, breaking the long-standing tradition of male leadership in the association’s history.

Her election is seen as a groundbreaking achievement for women in Ghana’s legal community, symbolizing her dedication, perseverance, and leadership. Ghartey has pledged to lead the GBA in upholding the rule of law, defending the rights of lawyers, and furthering the growth of the legal profession in Ghana.

The inauguration ceremony for Ghartey’s historic presidency is scheduled for Monday, November 4, 2024.
