Ford Issues Recall of 694,000 Crossover SUVs in the U.S. for Fuel Leak Risk

Ford is issuing a recall of over 694,000 crossover SUVs in the U.S. due to a fuel leak problem that could potentially lead to fires, reports the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The affected models, including certain Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles from specific years, have fuel injectors that may crack and leak fuel, posing a danger of ignition. Signs of the issue include a strong fuel smell, dashboard warnings, smoke, or visible flames. Despite previous repairs in 2022 and 2024, some vehicles are still at risk, prompting Ford to estimate a $570 million cost for the expanded recall.

The NHTSA believes only a small percentage of the recalled cars may have the defect and previously voiced concerns about the effectiveness of Ford’s initial software update solution. After reassessing the situation, Ford found instances of fires in repaired vehicles, leading to a temporary software update to address the problem while a permanent mechanical solution is in the works.

In addition to the software fix, Ford is also exploring other measures, like drain tubes, to prevent fuel leaks and reduce the risk of fires. The safety of consumers remains a top priority for the car manufacturer as they work to resolve the issue efficiently and effectively.
