Fire Halts Tony-Winning Musical The Book of Mormon Reopening

As theatergoers eagerly anticipated the reopening of the Tony-winning musical The Book of Mormon, a devastating fire on May 4 brought those plans to a halt. The fire, which caused “significant damage,” resulted in the closure of the theater and a delay in performances that left both cast and audience members disappointed. After initial hopes of reopening on Thursday, May 21 were dashed, producers announced that the show would remain closed through May 26 as repairs from the electrical fire continued.

The fire, which broke out at 10:30 a.m. in the spotlight room, left Assistant Chief David Simms describing it as “deep-seated,” with damage extending to the theater’s fourth-floor electrical room. Water damage was widespread throughout the venue, prompting concerns about the building’s safety. While a firefighter who responded to the scene sustained injuries, thankfully no theater personnel were harmed. The New York City Fire Department declared the building unsafe until repairs could be made, leaving fans and performers eagerly awaiting updates on when they could return to the beloved production.

As the theater works diligently to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all involved, including the cast, crew, and audiences, the production is now set to resume on Wednesday, May 27 at the iconic Eugene O’Neill Theatre. This venue has hosted numerous acclaimed shows over the years, including The Odd Couple (1966), Annie (1981), and Spring Awakening (2006), cementing its status as a Broadway mainstay.

Amidst the setbacks caused by the fire, The Book of Mormon is also on the cusp of a major milestone, celebrating its 15th anniversary with original cast members such as Andrew Rannells, Josh Gad, Nikki M. James, and Rory O’Malley making guest appearances. Originally opening on Broadway in February 2011, the show has garnered a loyal following and critical acclaim, making its extended closure all the more disappointing for fans.

As the theater community eagerly awaits the return of The Book of Mormon, the unexpected fire serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of those involved in the production. Despite the setbacks, the show’s loyal fan base remains eager to return to the theater and support the cast and crew as they work to bring this beloved musical back to the stage.
