Femicide In London: How Black Men Are Perpetrating Violence

Black women in London, England are said to be experiencing a higher level of femicide than any other ethnic group. Statistics have also revealed that Black men are at the core of those perpetrating this violence.

According to a report by the BBC, a study carried out by the P.A News Agency saw a 62% increase in 2023 of Black women who encountered femicide. This was following a 43% recording of Black women who had been murdered in 2022.

The data was obtained from records kept by the Metropolitan police. The MET police also recorded that sharp instruments were the most commonly used in the perpetration of the violence.

Speaking on behalf of Southall Black Sisters, an organisation dedicated to assisting marginalised victims of abuse, Ms. Selma Taha expressed shock and asked why “Black women’s lives are so obsolete?”.

The MET Police Commander Kevin Southworth said: “We are committed to protecting those who are at risk, regardless of their ethnicity or faith, and understand that communities are affected in different ways.”
