Farewell to Lindblad Expeditions’ Legendary Vessels: The National Geographic Sea Bird and Sea Lion

The sun sets on an era of exploration as Lindblad Expeditions bids farewell to their longtime vessels, the National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion. Set to retire after over three decades of nautical adventures, these iconic ships have been a staple in the world of cruise travel, setting the stage for unforgettable experiences for countless passengers.

Originally christened in the late 1980s as the Great Rivers Explorer and Majestic Alaska Explorer, the Sea Bird and Sea Lion found a new home under the Lindblad banner in the early ’90s. Since then, they have become synonymous with adventure, navigating the waters of Alaska each summer and exploring river and coastal channels during the off-season.

As the sun sets on their final voyages in 2026, the Sea Bird and Sea Lion will make their way to the Columbia and Snake Rivers, offering passengers one last chance to experience the magic of these storied vessels. Their retirement marks the end of an era, but also paves the way for new beginnings in the world of expedition cruising.

Replacing the Sea Bird and Sea Lion is the Greg Mortimer, a larger vessel set to take passengers on new Alaskan adventures starting in 2027. With a focus on providing even more exciting itineraries and opportunities for exploration, Lindblad Expeditions looks towards the future with hope and anticipation.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Greg Mortimer to our Alaska fleet, offering new and exciting experiences for our guests,” shared Natalya Leahy, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions. “While we say goodbye to the Sea Bird and Sea Lion, we look forward to creating new memories and adventures with the Greg Mortimer.”

As the Sea Bird and Sea Lion sail off into the sunset, their legacy lives on in the hearts of all those who have had the privilege of traveling aboard these magnificent vessels. Their final farewell season in 2026 is a tribute to the countless adventures and memories they have provided over the years. Join us in celebrating the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in the world of expedition cruising.
