The atmosphere at Milan Design Week is often filled with items that draw crowds but keep them at a distance. People stand back, admiring high-priced chairs like they’re pieces in a museum. But my morning took me to a different world at the IKEA PS 2026 preview.
The Swedes have a different approach. Instead of somber unveils, they welcome visitors into a real, lived-in apartment. It feels cozy and inviting, like stepping into a friend’s home.
Their tenth PS collection is all about “playful functionality.” I got to spend the morning exploring three standout pieces without any barriers or restrictions. The steel and pine designs were there to touch and experience first-hand.
First up was Alexander “Lex” Pott’s $45 IKEA PS 2026 Lamp. From a distance, it looks like a sleek industrial cylinder. But the backstory is even more fascinating. The design was inspired by a broomstick that Lex chopped up in his studio. The lamp’s adjustable angles make it versatile for different lighting needs.
Next, the IKEA PS 2026 Rocking Bench by Marta Krupińska caught my eye. Made of solid pine, the bench resembles a giant wooden smile. Its unique design was inspired by the long tables at Oktoberfest, aiming to create a feeling of celebration and togetherness in everyday life.
Mikael Axelsson’s IKEA PS 2026 Air Chair was the final piece I explored. Unlike the flimsy chairs of the 90s, this version features a sturdy carbon steel frame and a textile cover for comfort. The innovative design allows the chair to be easily moved and stored, perfect for modern living spaces.
The collection won’t be available until May, but the buzz in Milan indicates that these pieces will be in high demand. Furniture that is both functional and playful is a refreshing change from the exclusivity often associated with design. A rocking pine smile and a lamp that bends to your needs are the perfect additions to any contemporary home.
