Europe: The Final Countdown Icon

The iconic Swedish rock band Europe exploded onto the music scene in 1987 with their synth-heavy hit, “The Final Countdown.” Written by Joey Tempest, this track quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. While it became a beloved ‘80s anthem, its true glory was yet to come.

Fast forward twenty-eight years to 2015, when “The Final Countdown” found new life and soared to No. 1 on a Billboard chart. Its resurgence came after being featured in a Geico insurance ad, propelling it to the top of the Hard Rock Digital Songs chart on October 31, 2015.

Interestingly, not all of the band members were initially sold on “The Final Countdown.” Guitarist John Norum once admitted to Guitar World that he found the song “dreadful” with its repetitive keyboard melody. He even questioned if Europe was turning into a band like Depeche Mode.

Despite Norum’s reservations, “The Final Countdown” proved to be a massive success. In an interview with Classic Rock, Norum expressed gratitude that his bandmates didn’t listen to him about the synth-heavy intro. The song went on to become Europe’s signature track, overshadowing their other hits like “Carrie.”

During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Joey Tempest embraced the band’s association with being a one-hit wonder, acknowledging that their journey had been long and fruitful. With eleven albums under their belt, Europe has found success in the rock circuit and beyond, making them feel accepted and content with their legacy.

As we reflect on Europe’s enduring legacy and the unexpected success of “The Final Countdown,” it’s clear that the band has carved out a unique place in music history. Their ability to blend synth-heavy melodies with hard rock sensibilities has solidified their status as icons in the industry. And while their sound may have evolved over the years, the magic of “The Final Countdown” continues to captivate audiences and defy expectations.
