Erin Murphy Shares Insights on Bewitched Casting Switch

Erin Murphy, known for her role on the iconic show Bewitched, recently shared insights into the casting switch of the character Darrin Stephens. In a 2026 appearance on Billy Corgan’s podcast, The Magnificent Others, Murphy revealed that the transition from Dick York to Dick Sargent as Darrin didn’t feel strange to her, as she had witnessed York’s struggles with pain behind the scenes during their time working together.

Murphy, now 61 years old, explained how she noticed York’s physical discomfort on set, even as a child. She recalled seeing him lean on a board between scenes due to his pain, leading her to understand why the recasting happened seamlessly for her. Despite this, the last season of Bewitched featured episodes written for York that he wasn’t able to film due to his health issues, resulting in the smooth introduction of Sargent as the new Darrin.

Before Sargent joined the cast, the network aired episodes without the Darrin character to mask York’s absence, although viewers immediately noticed the change. York’s sudden exit from the show was a result of a severe spine injury he sustained years before, leading to his reliance on painkillers and cortisone. His collapse on set in 1969 marked the end of his time on Bewitched, with Sargent taking over the role for the following season.

In a touching moment, Murphy shared that York found solace in spending time with her on set, often telling her stories to distract himself from the pain. She described him as a paternal figure, particularly in comparison to Sargent, highlighting the close bond they shared despite the challenging circumstances York faced.

The legacy of Bewitched and the impact of the casting switch continue to resonate among fans of the show. Murphy’s insights into the behind-the-scenes dynamics offer a deeper understanding of the challenges the actors faced, adding a layer of complexity to the beloved series. As we revisit this iconic show through a modern lens, it’s clear that the relationships between the cast members were just as enchanting off-screen as they were on-screen.
