In a recent revelation, beloved Lifetime dermatologist Sandra Lee shared a harrowing experience from last November, when a medical emergency struck unexpectedly. The star of “Dr. Pimple Popper” disclosed that she had suffered a stroke, leading to a pause in Season 2 filming. Opening up exclusively to People, Dr. Lee described feeling off while on set, experiencing what she thought was a hot flash and discomfort unlike her usual self. The incident occurred on Nov. 20 at her practice in Upland, California, amid a normal day of seeing patients.
Following filming, Dr. Lee made her way to her parents’ house nearby, feeling restless and noticing shooting pains in one leg. Unable to rest, she struggled to navigate stairs and, upon awaking the next day, realized something was seriously wrong. Concerned about the possibility of a stroke, she noticed her hand weakening when extended and faced difficulty articulating. Her father, also a dermatologist, urged her to seek immediate medical attention, leading to the diagnosis of an ischemic stroke, where brain cells are deprived of oxygen due to blocked blood vessels.
The ramifications of the stroke forced Dr. Lee to halt production of Season 2 and embark on a two-month recovery journey involving physical and occupational therapy to reclaim balance and movement. Reflecting on the ordeal, she admitted that her blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which were previously uncontrolled, posed a significant stroke risk. While her symptoms have subsided, the dermatologist now takes blood thinner medication and continues physical therapy to address any lingering effects.
In a candid reflection, Dr. Lee expressed gratitude for her nearly restored health, emphasizing the profound realization of life’s preciousness that emerged from the experience. The enduring message serves as a poignant reminder of resilience and appreciation for well-being.
