Conan O’Brien’s Heartfelt Tribute to Martin Short

At the end of the 2026 Oscars ceremony, Conan O’Brien had a heartfelt message for his longtime friend, Martin Short. Although Short was not in attendance, O’Brien made sure to give him a shoutout before wrapping up the night.

The reason for O’Brien’s special mention of Short seemed to be a gesture of support and love following the recent loss of Short’s daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, who tragically died by suicide on February 23 at the age of 42.

While Short has not publicly commented on his daughter’s passing, his performances with Steve Martin were postponed due to what was described as “unforeseen circumstances.” However, Short is expected to return to the comedy show on April 11 in Savannah, Ga.

This devastating loss is not the first tragedy Short has faced. Fifteen years before Katherine’s death, Short’s wife, Nancy Dolman, passed away at the age of 58 after battling ovarian cancer. Additionally, earlier in Short’s life, he experienced the deaths of his brother and both his parents.

In the face of such profound loss, Short’s resilience and strength are evident. His ability to navigate through unimaginable grief while continuing his creative pursuits is a testament to his unwavering spirit.

In the wake of these heartaches, Short’s presence at the Oscars, albeit in spirit, serves as a reminder of the enduring power of friendship and support during times of sorrow.
