The rapper, best known for her hit “Money,” revealed that she underwent surgery earlier this year tohave more of her butt injections removed, two years after beginning the extraction process.
“In January, right after I shot ‘Like What,’ I went and had surgery,” Cardi, 31, said during an Instagram Live on Sept. 29.
“I had more butt injections removed because, you know, it takes multiple rounds to get them all out. I also had to address some issues with my fibrosis.”
The injections in Cardi’s butt were biopolymers—a liquid silicone gel—which doctors warn can be life-threatening and lead to various health complications, including fibrosis.
Cardi shared the news of her latest surgery while discussing how she was surprised to find out she was pregnant with her third child, whom she recently welcomed with her estranged husband, Offset, earlier this month.
The “Bodak Yellow” rapper, also mother to Kulture, 6, and Wave, 3, noted that despite undergoing two blood tests before the procedure, her pregnancy remained undetected.
Although she was initially anxious that her baby girl might experience complications due to the surgery, Cardi said the birth went “perfectly.”
In 2022, during another Instagram Live session, Cardi revealed that she had removed 95% of her butt injections, which she had originally received in 2014 in a basement. She urged her followers to think carefully before making changes to their bodies.
“All I’m going to say is, if you’re young—19, 20, 21—and you’re like ‘OMG, I don’t have enough fat for a fat transfer, so I’ll just get butt shots,’ b—h, don’t f—ing do it!”
Cardi has been open about her experiences with plastic surgery, which include breast implants, rhinoplasty, and liposuction. In 2019, after giving birth to Kulture, Cardi had to cancel several performances to allow for more recovery time following a procedure.
Reflecting on her journey, the “Enough” rapper explained to E! why she chooses to be so candid about cosmetic surgery.
“It was important to me because I don’t like lying about things,” the Grammy winner said at the time. “People think you just go to the doctor, and boom, you come out looking amazing, but it’s actually a long recovery process. It takes more than three or four months.”
