California Man Sentenced to Life for Murder of Ex-Girlfriend

A shocking and heartbreaking story unfolded in California when a 51-year-old man, Lawyer Dushan McBride, was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering his ex-girlfriend after she broke up with him. The tragic incident took place in 2017, when McBride hunted down Rashanda Franklin, cut her off with his vehicle, and fatally shot her in front of her young children. This devastating act of violence highlights the grim reality of domestic abuse, which claims too many lives. While no verdict can bring back a mother taken from her children in such a senseless manner, the sentencing provides a semblance of justice and accountability for the victim’s family.

The court sentenced McBride to 95 years to life in prison for charges including murder, firing into an occupied vehicle, stalking, and using a firearm to cause death. McBride will serve a determinate sentence of 20 years and 4 months, followed by an indeterminate sentence of 75 years to life.

The tragic incident occurred on April 4, 2017, when McBride, then 43 years old, was involved in a romantic relationship with 30-year-old Rashanda Franklin. After Franklin ended the relationship, McBride continued to stalk and harass her leading up to the fatal encounter. The day of her death, Franklin, who was dropping off her children for school, noticed McBride and attempted to drive away with her children aged 9 and 5. McBride intercepted her at an intersection and fatally shot her in front of her helpless children.
