The buzz in the film industry is now focusing on a biopic about the early years of music legend Billy Joel, following the success of Michael at the box office.
Directed by John Ottman, the upcoming film “Billy & Me” will delve into Joel’s origins before fame and the release of his classic hit “Piano Man” in 1973. The story will be told through the perspective of Irwin Mazur, Joel’s first manager who discovered him in 1966 and guided his career until his breakthrough with Columbia Records in 1972.
Last year, HBO released a documentary titled “And So It Goes” about the Grammy-winning artist, providing audiences with a glimpse into his life and career.
The production team has acquired exclusive life rights from Mazur and Joel’s longtime friend Jon Small, who will also serve as a consultant, co-executive producer, and second unit director. Small, who was Joel’s drummer in the Hassles, believes the script captures the essence of Joel’s early years and rise to stardom authentically.
Despite Mazur’s approval, the project lacks Joel’s endorsement, music rights, and life rights needed for its completion. Joel’s representative stated that they have informed all parties involved that they do not possess the necessary permissions to move forward with the project.
The controversy surrounding the biopic adds another layer of intrigue to Joel’s legendary career, showcasing the complexities of the entertainment industry and the challenges of portraying a prominent figure without their full consent.
In the midst of Hollywood’s obsession with biopics, “Billy & Me” stands out as a controversial yet captivating project that sheds light on the complexities of fame and artistic expression. This film promises to offer a raw and unfiltered perspective on one of music’s most renowned figures, challenging traditional narratives and expectations in the process.
