Billy Bob Thornton Opens Up About OCD and Anxiety on Howie Mandel Does Stuff Podcast

Billy Bob Thornton sat down for a revealing conversation about his mental health on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, shedding light on his struggles with OCD and anxiety. The Landman star reminisced about a poignant childhood memory with Mandel and his daughter, Jackelyn Shultz, sharing how his OCD first surfaced while growing up with his late father.

Thornton candidly recalled, “It’s well known that I have all these different things. I have a severe anxiety disorder as well as OCD, and I grew up dyslexic. When I was growing up, they didn’t have programs, and it wasn’t a thing, you know. They just thought you were an idiot at school. I grew up with it… my dad was not particularly nice to me.”

The Boxmasters frontman also recounted a fascinating encounter with legendary singer-songwriter Warren Zevon in their West Hollywood apartment complex during his early acting years. This moment of shared understanding about their OCD bonded them in a unique way, showing how even in the midst of struggles, connections can be formed.

Throughout the interview, Thornton delved into past discussions with his daughter regarding their shared mental health challenges, highlighting how these experiences are often misunderstood by the public. He eloquently stated, “[We talk] about how these things are looked at by the public as detriments. But they’re actually strengths, especially in the arts.”

In a world where mental health conversations are slowly becoming more normalized, Billy Bob Thornton’s openness serves as a reminder that vulnerability can be a source of strength. By sharing his personal journey, he sheds light on the complexities of living with OCD and anxiety, breaking down stigma one honest conversation at a time.
