Anna Kendrick, star of Pitch Perfect, recently opened up about her 2022 film Alice Darling, which eerily mirrored her experience escaping an emotionally abusive relationship.
“I’d just exited a similarly toxic relationship,” Kendrick shared on Call Her Daddy (Oct. 23). “I kept the role private, fearing others would advise against it.”
Kendrick’s character struggled to recognize abuse; similarly, she found identification challenging.
“It didn’t fit traditional patterns,” she explained. “Abuse often unfolds gradually.” Her seven-year relationship shifted abruptly, lasting a year.
“It came out of nowhere,” the 39-year-old continued. “With deep love and trust, I assumed blame. Recognizing his culpability was difficult.”
Even their therapist initially struggled to identify abuse signs.
“In subsequent sessions, he apologized for missing red flags,” Kendrick noted.
A pivotal therapy moment helped her reevaluate.
“I emailed apologizing for losing composure,” she recalled. “The therapist called, saying, ‘I’m proud of you.’ That’s when I knew something shifted.”
Afterward, the relationship ended swiftly.
When considering Alice Darling, Kendrick sought autonomy.
“I wanted to take the leap without hesitation,” she said. “No time for self-doubt or external influence – just instinct.”
